  • Tom Homan, chosen by President-elect Donald Trump for border enforcement, aims to have weekly White House briefings to update on illegal migrant arrests and removals.
  • Homan's top priorities include securing the U.S.-Mexico border, implementing a broad deportation program and locating 300,000 missing undocumented children.
  • He plans to end the "catch-and-release" program for asylum seekers on day one and is already negotiating with other countries to house these individuals.
  • Homan, a former Fox News commentator, believes his media experience will help him effectively communicate the administration's immigration policies.
  • Trump confirmed Homan's role as "border czar," responsible for managing all border and maritime security aspects, without requiring Senate confirmation.
Tom Homan, President-elect Donald Trump's pick to lead the largest deportation operation in American history, has called for weekly White House briefings to update the public on the number of illegal migrants being arrested and removed from the country. During an event in Naples, Florida, hosted by Young Republicans, the incoming border czar, told donors that he will prioritize three main areas: securing the U.S.-Mexico border, launching a comprehensive deportation program and tracking down 300,000 missing undocumented children. Homan also addressed one of the new policy's most contentious aspects: the fate of asylum seekers currently released under the catch-and-release program. "It will be sad, controversial and emotional," he said. "But we have to end catch-and-release on day one." Homan added that he has already initiated negotiations with several countries to house asylum seekers. "I'm not waiting for Jan. 20," he explained. "We are already having discussions. So we'll find a third country." (Related: Incoming "border czar" Tom Homan: Trump's mass deportation operation to start in Chicago.) This new enforcement strategy will begin the same day Trump is sworn into office. Homan, who previously served as a Fox News commentator, believes his media experience will make him an ideal spokesperson for the administration's immigration policies. He stressed that his team will ensure that the American public is kept informed about their progress. "We need to be very transparent," Homan said at the event. "There needs to be a weekly White House press briefing on exactly who we're arresting and who we're saving, who we are putting in jail, who we are deporting, so the American people know we're true to our word."

Trump believes Homan "will do a fantastic job" as the border czar

Homan's new role will not require Senate confirmation, unlike other cabinet appointments, and will encompass all aspects of border and maritime security. The incoming Trump transition team has not yet released a response regarding Homan's statement, but shortly after winning the presidential election, Trump confirmed that Homan will be responsible for managing "all deportation of illegal aliens back to their country of origin" and will play a significant role in"southern border security, northern border security, maritime security and aviation security." "I am pleased to announce that the Former [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] ICE Director, and stalwart on Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration, in charge of our Nation's Borders ('The Border Czar'), including, but not limited to, the Southern Border, the Northern Border, all Maritime and Aviation Security," Trump wrote on Truth Social in November. "I've known Tom for a long time and there is nobody better at policing and controlling our Borders. Likewise, Tom Homan will be in charge of all deportation of illegal aliens back to their country of origin. I have no doubt he will do a fantastic, and long-awaited, job."
