When you push radical nonsense long enough, eventually the donors dry up, the base checks out, and the circus tent folds up and collapses. Well, that’s exactly what’s happening with David Hogg’s once-hyped anti-gun group, March for Our Lives. Turns out, screaming about gun bans and calling half the country “terrorists” isn’t a smart or sustainable business model. Who knew? The group just announced that it’s laying off nearly all its staff—meaning 13 out of 16 full-time employees are getting the boot. The group is citing “financial challenges.” It appears they’re desperately trying to restructure. Their new executive director is a 24-year-old Parkland survivor and original co-founder, who now says things would’ve looked different if Trump hadn’t won. Jaclyn Corin, a Parkland survivor and one of the organization’s co-founders, plans to focus on digital strategy and youth mobilization. March for Our Lives, the youth-led gun violence prevention organization, announced Thursday that it is laying off 13 of 16 full-time staffers. The group is naming as its new executive director Jaclyn Corin, 24, one of the organization’s original co-founders and a Parkland survivor. “We are facing financial challenges as an organization, not unlike many nonprofit advocacy organizations in this time,” Corin said in an exclusive interview with The 19th. “I am sure things would look differently with a different outcome of the election, but these are the systems and circumstances in which we have to make adjustments based on the financial situation we find ourselves in. It is incredibly unfortunate that these cuts have to happen.” Democratic donors have significantly pulled back funding for both Democratic candidates and progressive organizations in the wake of Republican Donald Trump’s triumph in the 2024 presidential election. According to tax filings, in 2023, the group spent $1.75 million, more than the $1.42 million it brought in that year, almost all from donations. March for Our Lives declined to share financial information for the 2024 fiscal year.
The timing is definitely raising eyebrows, and many believe something fishy is going on—possibly even connected to the downfall of USAID. But while the rumors are flying, it’s only fair to note there’s no solid proof (yet) that this is why March for Our Lives is collapsing.
